The Junior League in Durham hosted “Cookies with Santa” in early December. Mary Lu loved saying and pointing out “Ho Ho” so we decided to go meet him. As she watched the other boys and girls climb up in his lap, she smiled, pointed at Santa and peeped around the other children in line to see Santa. Then, when it was her turn, she had a change of heart. She did not want a candy cane from the strange man in a red suit and black sneakers. We snapped a few pictures before we picked our crying child up out of Santa’s lap. As we walked away, she turned around, waved to Santa and said “bye bye.” We have teased that Santa says HO HO to Mary Lu, but Mary Lu says BYE BYE to Santa!
